Short biography
Marie Johnston is Professor Emeritus of Health Psychology at the University of Aberdeen, and was previously at St Andrews University, Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine and Oxford University. She was the founder chair of Health Psychology within the British Psychological Society (BPS) and second President of the European Health Psychology Society (EHPS). She is an Honorary Fellow of BPS and EHPS and a Fellow of the Academy of Learned Societies for the Social Sciences, the Royal Society of Edinburgh, the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, the American Society of Behavioral Medicine.
Her current research focuses on health behaviour change intervention and theory (including the development of methods for reporting behaviour change interventions), healthcare professional behaviour (especially in delivering evidence-based healthcare) and disability. Theory and methodological development (especially in the measurement of health outcomes) are important features of all of her work. Her research is supported by grants from research councils, governmental, charity and international grant-awarding organisations.
She taught medical students for 25 years in London and St Andrews and developed one of the first Masters courses in Health Psychology with colleagues. She has consistently held both academic and health service appointments including delivering patient services in primary and secondary care as well as being involved in policy committees and in advising Government.
